HISTORY

As many young South Africans do, Lance and his girlfriend (now wife) Linky travelled the world in the ‘90s, searching for the ultimate surfing and snowboarding session. They funded this by working in breweries and restaurants and came to love the American-style brewpub experience.

In 2013, Lance broke his neck in a surfing accident. He would have died had he not been pulled out of the water by fellow surfers and resuscitated by two trauma surgeons who were miraculously on the beach. His long recovery allowed Lance to reimagine his life and focus on his passion for brewing beer. Lance and Linky took the plunge, and the St. Francis Brewing Co. was born.

By the following year, they planned to brew beer on-site for local consumption. It took only one season to realise the thirst for their beer was huge—they couldn’t keep up with demand. Lance approached friends at the Devils Peak Brewing Co., and they contracted-brewed three of Lance’s award-winning beers.

And so the transition from producing small-scale craft beer to that of premium began. Lance’s beers could now keep up the desired volumes and not skimp on quality, consistency or the critical slow-brewing process.

Another part of Lance and Linky’s dream was to host regular live music. It wasn’t long before the St. Francis Brewing Co. became a favourite gig for bands on their touring circuit. After years in small premises in the heart of the village, the St. Francis Brewing Co. outgrew its original home and is now thriving in a much larger venue next door. Other events, besides live music, are now part of their calendar, including comedians, movie nights, produce markets, book reviews, trivia nights and art exhibitions. The St. Francis Brewing Co.’s transformation has seamlessly taken place, always with a stoked smile and a Beach Blonde at hand.
